The term was specifically introduced to define the category of European representatives obtained by the method of selection of heavy and purebred breeds. Historically, they have been brought out for military purposes to smooth out the inflammatory traits of a thoroughbred character and to make the new breed more obedient and fit for hard work, at the same time without losing the harness.

Breed history
A significant role in the formation of the breed was played by the Danish King Johann VI and, earlier, by his brother, German commander Christoph Oldenburg. The county at that time belonged to one of the developed and active in the military plan of the European principalities and needed good durable horses with pronounced harness.

Work on the breed began around 1573, when Johann VI became Earl of Oldenburg and was completed in 1603. During this period, all equestrian farms in the region were reorganized for the economic development of the area. His case was succeeded by Anton I. Johann VI from 1575 to 1603 purchased for breeding representatives of exquisite Turkish breed, powerful Andalusian and Neapolitan horses in order to obtain his own unique breeding stock of new carriage-harness breeds. The offspring were further improved by crossing with the Neapolitan and Iberian breeds. The result was a horse with the characteristic beautiful harness alum used for carriages. Since the seventeenth century, the resulting individuals have become more noble and sophisticated thanks to breeding with thoroughbred horse racehorses, Berberian and Arabian breed.
